Julius Reder Carlson is an (ethno)musicologist, classical guitarist, and an active participant in community music making in the LA area.
Julius’ areas of academic interest include the roles of technology in the representation of folk musics and the relationship of the Western art music canon to the politics of 19th-century German-speaking Europe. He has conducted research in Argentina and Germany with the support of the Fulbright-Hays and the DAAD.
Julius has performed internationally as a soloist and accompanist, working with art and folk music ensembles, and contributing to the compilation album Tenemos las mismas manos, winner of a 2016 Chilean Pulsar award.
A co-founder of the Santa Monica Youth Orchestra, he is deeply invested in exploring the power of music as a vehicle for positive social change
